Sirvintos is a town on Sirvinta river-bank, Sirvinta is an affluent of Sventoji River. The name of the town emanates out of the name of the river Sirvinta.
First time the region has been mentioned in historical documents in the end of 14th century, and the town first was mentioned in 1475. Despite the fact that the town was close to the trade route, Sirvintos did not expand for a long time. In November – December 1920 not far from Sirvintos and Giedraiciai a skirmish between Lithuanian army and Polish general L. Zheligovskij’s army took place. L. Zheligovskij’s army already occupied Vilnius and wanted to go forth to Lithuania to Ukmerge. After persistent fights polish army was stopped. Lithuanian army was supervised by general Silvestras Zukauskas. United Nations Organization claimed to stop the battle. A truce was signed in Kaunas. Sirvintos became a part of a neutral zone, and three years later became a part of Lithuania. But the distance to dividing line kept the town down.
Sirvintos started to develop when Sirvintos District was established in 1950. By the river Sirvinta Town Square was built. There is a sculpture “Sirvinta” (1981, the sculptor is V. Ketvirtis) – it is a sylph girl who emerges from the river.

The monument in remembrance of those who died for Lithuanian Independence was rebuilt (sculptor R. Antinis, 1927). It was destroyed during Soviet period. The monument represents a mother who holds her dieing son. Robertas Antinis Jr. (son) has rebuilt the monument after Lithuania gained independence.
The Church of St. Archangel Michael was established in 1475. Three sisters from Astikas family have built the Church. This is also the date of town establishment. The present church was built in 1855 – 1860, during the so-called historical period when in architecture dominated different styles’ combinations. The exterior of Sirvintos church resembles Renaissance style but also has Baroque elements. In the interior of the church there are 19th
century paintings.
