Ciobiskis

Ciobiskis is located in confluence of rivers Neris and Muse. There is a classicism palace built by Sveikauskas family in 18th century. The palace was designed by a famous Lithuanian architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevicius, who built Cathedral and City Hall in Vilnius. It’s a one-storey classicism building with a two-storey 4 columns portico in the middle of the manor.

Classicism style stone church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1810 – 1816. The founder of the church was Pilsudskiai family, who bought Ciobiskis manor from Sveikauskas family in 19th century and were the owners of the manor till the end of the century. Pilasters separate the walls of the church. On the main façade there are 18th century wooden sculptures of evangelists in the niches between pilasters. There are 19th century paintings of St. Apostles, and a portrait of the church’s founder Jonas Krizostomas Pilsudskis in the interior of the church.

A horse bridge over the river Muse was built in 1933. The bridge is called after pilots Darius and Girenas, who crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

Composer and conductor Jonas Dambrauskas (1892 – 1982) was born in Pamusiu village in Ciobiskis district. He was working in National and Lithuania Opera and Ballet Theatres.

Poet Jonas Vilkelis (1888 – 1967) was born in Strazdu village. From 1907 he was living in the USA, was a mineworker, and published his book of poems “Gyvenimo sûkuriai” in 1956.
